Atkins claimed that main reason for body weight is the over consumption of carbohydrates such as sugar, flour, and high content of fructose in corn syrups; and second cause is saturated fats in food products bringing nutritional problems. He didn't agree with the food pyramid and he believed that metabolic disorders are the effects of refined carbohydrates. He also believed that most of the eating disorders are due to hyperinsulinism through over consumption of carbohydrates, which causes food cravings and unstable blood levels resulting into mood swings, depression, and sleeping disorders. He claimed that his diet is a remedy for all these disorders. He mostly focused on the diet, nutritional supplements and regular and proper exercise. Atkins diet limits the carbohydrate consumption to switch from carb burning to fat burning which can stabilize the blood sugar level. Carb contents are restricted to about 20 grams per day in the first two weeks. One can eat red meat, fish, fowl, and regular cheese. Then carb level can be increased, but still diet is restricted to the food products such as milk, white rice, refined sugar, white bread, potatoes and pasta. After two weeks, fruits, vegetables and other whole grain foods can be allowed in the diet. Over some time, carb level can be increased gradually but maintaining body weight. Conclusion: Atkins diet can help to reduce body weight considerably in some days quickly. But still results into some side effects such as weakness, tiredness, dizziness, heart related disorders, and premature ageing. According to statistics, in January 2004 more than nine percent people were using the Atkins diet, but by November 2004, it had dropped to less than four percent.
