Atkins diet is a contemporary and a modern diet plan which aims at reducing the carbohydrate content of the food to reduce weight. Atkins diet basically is comprised of protein and fat rich food. The quantity of carbohydrate is greatly reduced all throughout the diet plan. Atkins diet claims to provide the person with good memory, healthy heart and a disease free life. Diet plan
The only strict rule to follow atkins diet is to drastically reduce the carbohydrate intake. Since carbohydrate is metabolized before fat to derive energy, it is considered that in the absence of carbohydrate fat would be burnt efficiently. Since atkins diet claims at reducing weight through the reduction of carbohydrates rather fat in the food unlike other traditional diet plans, atkins diet does not look like a diet food surprisingly. It sets only a small restriction on the quantity of food but the quality of food is strictly taken care of. For example carbohydrate containing food such as sugar, milk, white rice and white flour are strictly prohibited. The food is mainly comprised of eggs, cheese, meat, butter and other high protein and fat content food. The carbohydrate in the food is not allowed to exceed 10-20 grams a day. In the first few weeks carbohydrate intake is reduced, no fruits but a few leafy vegetables are allowed. In the subsequent weeks carbohydrates is allowed but only in the form of high fiber food. As gradually the weight is reduced the carbohydrate in form of fruits and vegetables are introduced in the diet. This diet plan also claims to reduce the appetite in due course of time. It freely allows the person to munch on fatty food even snacks. Beverages like decaf coffee or tea, soda, low sugar drinks such as diet coke etc are acceptable. Conclusion Atkins diet cannot be followed by everyone as it mainly consists of protein and fat rich food which mainly comes from animal products in form of meat, eggs, cheese and butter. Vegetarian diet does not very well support atkins diet as it does not supply protein substitutes for animal products. |
