Atkins diet is a contemporary and a modern diet plan which aims at reducing the carbohydrate content of the food to reduce weight. Atkins diet basically is comprised of protein and fat rich food. The quantity of carbohydrate is greatly reduced all throughout the diet plan. Carbohydrate is metabolized before fats so by reducing the quantity of carbohydrates fats are effectively burnt and hence helps in weight reduction. Atkins diet claims to provide the person with good memory, healthy heart and a disease free life.

Atkins diet's theory was propounded by Dr. Robert Atkins in the year of 1972. It emphasizes at cutting down the carbohydrate level in the food. This goes against the balanced diet theory which says that all nutrients must be present in the food in proportion. This diet suffered many controversies following Dr. Atkins death in 2003 when he suffered serious head injuries. Following his death questions were raised on the efficacy of his diet plan as he himself was obese when he died and apparently he died because of heart problems. Some of the food specialists vehemently supported the diet plan and some were completely against it as it questioned the basis of nutrition.

Atkins diet had come as a revolution in the year of 2003 and 2004 so much so that the sales of carb food and drinks plummeted and the companies had to immediately introduce sugar free diet drinks to avoid the losses. Studies revealed that carb free diet could lead to nausea, bad breath, dizziness etc. So far this diet has worked without any side effects and has provided the desired results. Some major questions were also raised when it was revealed that following such a diet for a very long time can cause protein deficiency. Protein digestion requires some neutralizing agents in form of calcium. This calcium if not provided externally is derived from bones leading to brittle or weak bones.

Atkins diet was a success but is difficult to be followed by vegetarians as vegetarian diet has limited sources for protein. And people face difficulty with adjusting with a diet that does not allow carbohydrate in any form.
