Low carb diet plan emphasizes on the reduction of carbohydrate in the food. In such diet the food is basically comprised of proteins and fats in form of meat, eggs, butter, cheese etc. Carbohydrates even in form vegetables and fruits are restricted. According to recent studies it has been proved that low carb diet is more effective than low fat diet. Carbohydrate is the most immediate source of energy for the body and when there is no carbohydrate the energy is derived from fat. So when the carb content of the food is greatly reduced, the energy is derived from the fat stored in the body leading to efficient metabolism of excess fat in the body.

The recent years have been flooding with the success stories of the low carb diet plan. The cholesterol level also improves more on a low carb diet as compared to the low fat diet. People under this diet plan suffer a reduction not only in their weight but the levels of triglycerides too. It also improves the HDL levels. This diet has to be supplemented with vitamins and minerals. It also helps the diabetic patients to get a control over their sugar levels. It also helps in avoiding certain coronary complications. Some people having a huge diet are also helped by atkins diet as it reduces the appetite over a period which also helps in weight reduction. It improves the memory capacity, helps in better heart functionality, and reduces the cholesterol level in the body. These help in keeping the body healthy and avoiding many fatal diseases pertaining to heart.

Atkins diet has undergone huge controversies over the three decades since it was introduced. It has proved its efficacy without any major side effects. A sudden switch from to carb free diet does lead to nausea, bad breath and dizziness. It can also leads to kidney stones and constipation as fiber rich food are not included in the diet plan strictly in the fist few weeks. It is introduced later but in very restricted quantities.
